A rare Meissen figure in the manufactory’s typically fine design and luminous colors
The figure depicts a bearded man standing on a square base with covered in sculptural flowers. He is wearing a purple coat with a sword on the belt and a typical headdress. In his right hand he holds an arrow and in his left hand a bow, carrying a quiver with arrows on the back.
The design of the figure is inspired by portraits from the work ‘Recueil de Cent Estampes Représentant Différentes Nations du Levant’ by Charles de Ferriol, who was the French ambassador at the Ottoman court from 1692 to 1711.
The figure bears the underglaze blue crossed swords with dot, model number ‘1299.’, impressed number ‘49’, painter’s number ‘33’ in iron red on the glazed base. It is in good condition. A small restoration to the arrow and the bow string. The height measures 20 cm. (tfa)
