Signed on the base ‘Seifert.’ and monogrammed with a ligated “HS”
Dimensions: c. 56 x 34 x 23 cm (height x width x depth)
Good condition
Rare dressed version of this draft. Seifert was a well-known representative of the Art Nouveau period; a similar, bronze cast variant of the subject has already fetched up to €12,500 at an international auction
Victor Heinrich Seifert continuously interpreted the female nude and created sculptures boasting Art Nouveau elegance at its best. The present alabaster figure reveals a version of a young maiden fishing. Although the fishing rod is replaced, the girl’s posture is still convincing and indicating her activity. The sculpture was also cast in bronze and thereby portrays the beautiful girl as a sensual nude.
The sculpture is signed on the base ‘Seifert.’ and monogrammed with a ligated “HS”. It is in good condition considering its age; the fishing rod is replaced and the material is slightly chipped off at the girl’s left hand. The sculpture measures c. 56 x 34 x 23 cm (height x width x depth) and the round marble base measures 3 cm in height and 23 cm in diameter.
Victor Heinrich Seifert (1870 - 1953)
Victor Heinrich Seifert was born in Döbling (Austria) in 1870. He received his artistic training at the ‘Kunstgewerbemuseum’ in Munich as well as at the Academy of Arts in Berlin, where he attended the classes of Ernst Herter, Ludwig Manzel and Peter Breuer. A number of study trips took him to Paris in 1903, to Italy in 1905 and to Brussels and London in 1910, before he became a professor in Berlin. He is well-known for his fountain figures and war memorial, which he usually preferred to cast in bronze. (cbo)
