Fine and detailed alabaster work, crafted in multi-stage relief
This alabaster relief was crafted by the Dutchman Nicolaas Daems in around 1630. Nicolaas Daems was active in Mechelen in around 1611 to 1632. The relief-plastic depiction shows a seated woman with gold staffaged gown and lush fruit baskets in front of a gold heightened tree. A monkey is sitting in a richly filled fruit basket and yawns for fruit that the lushly vested woman is offering him. The depiction can be interpreted as an old master caricature against consumption and waste.
The relief is monogrammed at the lower edge of the relief ‘ND’. The relief is besides cracks and abrasion of the gold in good condition. The frame displays traces of use and the corners of the frame are broken. On the back is a mounted wooden board of the time. The relief measures 10 x 12.5 cm. The dimensions of the frame are 20 x 22 cm. (tm)
