Ornate clock decorated in opulent Rococo style with allegorical motif
The mantle clock features an ornate case with shell, rocaille and leaf decoration on three scroll feet supporting three putti with corresponding attributes representing the elements of fire, water and earth. A fourth putti as an allegory of the air crowns the case. The round, enamel dial framed by a gilt bead and reel bezel has Roman numerals and openwork gilt hands. The movement was presumably made by Lenzkirch. It features a spring-driven movement and strike on a bell. The clock sits on a pedestal of matching design adorned with polychrome floral and insect painting.
The pedestal and case each bear the underglaze blue crossed swords with accented knobs, incised number ‘2172’ and onglaze red painter’s numeral ‘28’ on the base. The clock is in very good condition with light signs of age and wear. A foot of the putto holding a cornucopia is restored. Minor losses to some flowers of the pedestal, the latter with two small firing cracks on the underside. The clock is functional; long-term precision and regularity cannot be guaranteed. The height of the cock is 46 cm, including the pedestal 56.5 cm. (tfa)
