Description
Joseph Jefferson, IV (1829-1905, Louisiana/Florida), "Wooded Louisiana Landscape," oil on paper, signed lower left, initialed lower right, presented in a wide gilt and gesso frame, within an oak shadowbox, H.- 19 in., W.- 30 in., accompanied by a 1906 copy of Joseph Jefferson, Reminiscences of a Fellow Player, by Francis Wilson, Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, inside cover affixed with a letter by the artist. Note: This landscape is possibly of Jefferson Island, Louisiana.
Condition
Condition consistent with age and use. A crease is noted starting at the center of the top edge, and continuing diagonally downwards toward the right edge. The surrounding paint appears thicker, and fluoresces slightly under UV light - apparent repair. At verso, there is corresponding discoloration, and original paper appears to have been adhered to a later backing paper. Some small areas of craquelure are observed along the top, surrounding the repair. Several other areas of small tears are observed throughout the paper, the largest approximately 2 by 3 inches along the right side of the trees. A ¼ inch hole is noted along the right edge, with ½ inch scratches around. An overall impressive scene.
