Garden, Robert I.. History of Scott Township, Mahaska County, Iowa and War Reminiscences... Oskaloosa, Iowa: Globes Presses, 1907 291pp. First Edition. original dark red cloth. Illus. This rare reminiscence recounts early pioneer life and settlement of Scott Township during the 1840's on the Iowa frontier, along with experiences as an officer with C.B, 3rd Iowa Infantry, in the Trans-Mississippi and western theaters. Garden includes descriptions of chasing Rebels in Missouri and then crossing the Mississippi to participate in the Shiloh campaign. His Three (3) chapters on the battle of Shiloh comprise some of the most detailed, honest, and accurate narrative on an Civil War battle. He also describes the subsequent action under General E.O.C. Ord on the Hatchie River, and the following year's Vicksburg Campaign, in which the 3rd Iowa suffered high casualties, especially during the siege of Jackson, Mississippi. This extremely rare book has seldom appeared for sale. The only bibliography recording the title is Dornbusch I, Iowa 89. The N.U.C. locates only a few copies.
