Smallest: 5 7/8” x 9”. ++ Lithographed color poster advertising a performance at Ford’s Theatre in Baltimore: "The Theatre Guild Presents Porgy by Dubose & Dorothy Heyward/Ford's Theatre Baltimore/Week Commencing Mon. March 18/Matinees Wednesday and Saturday." [The stage version of Porgy premiered in 1927.] Signature “Simonson” lithographed in image, at lower right: “Carey and Sons Lith. NY.” Contemp backing. Horizontal crease, darkening or soiling to edges. Tape repair to lower edge. ++ 1948 color lithograph poster advertising a movie with an all-black cast. “All-American Pictures Presents Dusty Fletcher in “Boarding House Blues…And a Brilliant All-Colored Cast...Directed by Josh Binney.” This was the second-to-last feature film made by All-American, which specialized in newsreels for black audiences. Verso toned, wear mostly to verso, tear to lower left portion, image very good. ++Window Card (14’ x 22”) on thicker stock paper with blank area at top, with “Carver Colored Theatre” venue and play dates added separately:” “The Bad Seed” is the Big Shocker!” 1956 color lithographed panel w/ top venue and play dates in Orlando, FL, added after in black stencil on off-white background. Adhesion evidence and staining to margins, evidence of tacks near upper corners of sheet, slight toning. ++ The successful silent filmmaker, Richard Norman, influenced by Oscar Micheaux, the pioneer of black film, rewrote a film script to feature an all-black cast in the drama, “The Green-Eyed Monster,” released in 1919 and 1920. 8” x 10” advertising flyer, double-sided on thin stock: “The Green-Eyed Monster: Stupendous All-Star Negro Motion Picture.” Several tiny chips to edges, otherwise near fine. ++ Cold War-era photo collage of an unidentified black pianist and singer, possibly representing one of the US government-sponsored international tours of jazz professionals. Stenciled quotes below photo from white celebrities of the 1950s and 1960s (Kay, Milton and Bland) suggest the artist “...as our answer to the Sputnik.” Original matting, taped to edges of the verso, some minor staining and adhesion evidence on verso. ++ Printed illustration of Frederick Douglass and Paul Laurence Dunbar, surmounted by a black angel in robes and halo holding an olive branch; possibly in reference to Dunbar’s 1913 poem, “Dawn,” with its opening line reference to “An angel, robed in spotless white,...” Tape strip to upper edge, tape evidence to margin, minor foxing, toning.
