Guest book from Martin Luther King, Jr.’s wake at Sister’s Chapel at Spelman College, where King’s body was made available for viewing. [1968]. [101]pp, roughly 15 names per page, about 1550 signatures. Heartfelt messages were left by Embassy officials and foreign dignitaries as well as by families and children, some of whom had traveled great distances to attend the service. Visitors came from France, Michigan, Pakistan, California, Britain, the Soviet Embassy, Massachusetts, Delaware, Italy, Germany, Illinois, New York, Australia, Iowa, New Zealand, Scotland, Canada, Ohio, New Hampshire, Maine, Texas, Kentucky, South Africa, Venezuela, Turkey, Sweden, Poland, Nigeria, Connecticut, Puerto Rico, Holland, Ohio, Maryland, Idaho, Virginia, Louisiana, Utah, Denmark, Ceylon, Sweden, Ireland, North Carolina, New Jersey, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Jamaica, Florida, and Indiana. Oblong 4to. Contemp leather dry and worn, loss at top of spine, fraying to corners of covers, flecks and scuffs to surface. Interior mostly near fine.++Accompanied by a photocopy list of the “V.I.P.’s Attending Funeral.” List includes Senators, Congressmen, foreign dignitaries, and heads of religious, political, and nonprofit organizations. Names include Governor Nelson Rockefeller (NY); Senators William Proxmire, Edward Kennedy, Edward Brooks and Eugene McCarthy, Mayor John Lindsey (NY); Thurgood Marshall, Walther Reuther, Sidney Poitier, Harry Belafonte, Sammy Davis Jr., Bill Cosby and Wilt Chamberlin. Stoney Cooks was asked by Martin Luther King's brother, Alfred Daniel Williams King, to help at the service, and he volunteered to keep the casket's glass cover clean and manage the security detail.
