Description
India, Madhia Pradesh, 19th Century A fine bronze container to hold spices with hinge. The patina that covers both the interior and the exterior indicates not only the old nature of the recipient but also the natural wear of a domestic object. The lid and the body are fully decorated with geometric motifs, typical of the Madhia Pradesh and the flat handle presents stylised dragonsÂ’ heads at the tip. The lock is in the form of a stylised lotus flower. There are various types of spice holders: some in wood others in metal; some are very simple and functional that on occasion feature smaller compartments inside to divide the spices; others can be more elaborate and with a higher artistic value.
