Kawase Bunjiro Hasui (1883-1957)
Born in Tokyo, Kawase Bunjiro Hasui first trained the techniques of watercolor and oil painting with Saburosuke Okada. He then studied with Aoyagi Bokusen and Araki Kann'yu. In 1911, he entered in the studio of Kaburagi Kiyokata, a great master of the traditional Japanese school. Hasui had a close connection to the publisher Watanabe Shozaburo (1885-1962), the founder of the Shin Hanga movement. By supplying poor artists with commissions, he prevented the extinction of the Japanese woodcut in colors. Shozaburo has published more than 400 woodcuts made by Hasui.
Condition: The woodcut is in the left and in the right margin and edge inscribed and bears a stamp. The condition is good with signs of wear consistent with age. The paper is slightly toned. The total dimension with frame is 50.5 x 35.5 cm and the image dimensions are 38.5 x 26 cm.
