Description
Artist: Mehely, Ivan. 1936. cca. 95 x 63 cm. Vintage poster. Paper, lithography. Budapest, 1936 may 3-10. Modernist poster by Ivan Mehely. The National Children's Week in Hungary was an annual official event during the so called Horthy era, the between wars period. It was supposed to be a social event, on which programs, charity events, donations, free meals etc. were organized to help the children. The Children's Week also served the goals of the propaganda. The political ideology of the Horthy system was based on conservatism, nationalism and the great influence of religion. The Catholic Church also played a role in the program; and the conservative values were highly represented in the family programs. Méhely was an important graphic designer of the age, he is known from his propaganda works in the 1930's and 1940's, and his theater posters from the later periods. He had a keen sense for typography, his posters usually use few motives with impressive scripts.National and traditional symbols appear on the poster: the national tricolor on the balls, and the traditional folklore dress both refer to Hungary's national identity. The poster was used more times with different overprinted scripts.
