Description
THE BOOK OF WISDOM IN A PRECIOUS BINDING

Cornelius a Lapide. Commentaria in Ecclesiasticum. A lapide e Societate Iesv, olim in Louaniensi, post in Romano Collegium Sacrarum Iterarum Professore. Antwerp: apud Hieronymum Verdussen, 1687.

Folio (320x205 mm), pigskin binding, five raised bands spine with traces of handwritten titles, covers with blind and tooled concentric floral panels, colored edges in dark-blue ink, presence of only one clasp on two, ff. [4], pp. 1040, ff. [49], [2, blank]. Latin text on 68 lines, divided in two columns.

Architectural engraved title-page (carved by Cornelis Galle) depicting the figure of Christ at the central top, under which two angels are represented; above the sculptural base are reproduced two apostles. At page 1038 an impression representing death's head under an hourglass, over the label Vitae et Mortis; at the end of the book and after the index, is reproduced a second chalcography of Cornelis Galle, depicting little angels within a floral decoration.

Beautiful Antwerp edition of Lapide's commentary on «Ecclesiasticus», the longest of the deuterocanonical books of the Bible, and the last of the Sapiential writings in the Vulgate of the Old Testament.

The fundamental thought of the author of Ecclesiasticus is that of wisdom as understood and inculcated in inspired Hebrew literature: Lapide explains the literal and the allegorical sense of the sacred text, searching to serve not only the historical study of the Bible but also the purposes of reverent meditation.

Cornelius Cornelii a Lapide was an exegete and a Jesuit. He was born in 1567 in Belgium, where he attended courses of theology and philosophy; in 1592 was ordained priest at the Society of Jesus. After becoming professor of Holy Scripture at Leuven, he was called to Rome in the same capacity. He died at Rome in 1637. All his work is dedicated to commemorate and comment the books of Canon of Scripture (with the exception only of the Book of Job and the Psalms); many Protestant scholars have recognized a Lapide's work as the most remarkable Scripture commentary.

Provenance: Inside cover with the hand writing: C. Ep. : St. Luis. Ex dono Canoni Barrois.
