Meret Oppenheim (1919-1985)

At a young age, Meret Oppenheim came into contact with important German writers, including Hermann Hesse, Gottfried Keller, Goethe and Rilke. At the beginning of the 1930s, she met Alberto Giacometti and Hans Arp in Paris, who invited her to exhibit at the ‘Salon des Surindépendants’. In 1933, she became acquainted with Max Ernst. In the same year, she was photographed by Man Ray and has since then been referred to as ‘Surrealist muse’. She entered in the circles of André Breton and Marcel Duchamp. From 1936, she dedicated herself to fashion designs. Oppenheim also realized works in public spaces, including the Oppenheim fountain in Bern. She was a member of the Akademie der Künste in Berlin and exhibited at the documenta in Kassel. Works by Oppenheim are found today in major museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York. (cko)
