Book III is devoted to the transportation and erection of the Vatican obelisk, which was moved from Nero s Circus to the front of the future new site of St. Peter s. The project, which took four and a half months to complete, required some 900 men, 150 horses and 47 cranes and was one of the greatest engineering feats of the Renaissance. The plates depicting this were copied from Domenico Fontana's work on 1590. The additional engravings comprise 2 folding plans of St.Peter's (one with contemporary ink annotations and watercolour over-slips of extensions to the basilica), and an engraved table of measurements.
