( Sir Francis) The Charge of Sir Francis Bacon Knight, his Maiesties Attourney generall, touching Duells, vpon an information in the Star-chamber against Priest and Wright , first edition , woodcut head-pieces and initials, first and last ff. blank, title soiled, small worm trace to corners of some ff., H3 with small repair to lower margin and 3 small marginal wormholes, some spotting, lightly browned, 20th century crushed morocco, slightly rubbed, [Gibson 102; STC 1125], small 4to, for Robert Wilson, 1614. Bacon against duels. He brought his case to court to see if it could 'doe any good to tame and reclaime that evill which seems unbridled'. Bacon viewed duels as a threat to authority and against the will of God. Provenance: Henry William Poor (leather booklabel to front pastedown).
