Description

Very much Enlarged and Amended by Thomas Johnson , second edition, first Johnson edition , title within fine engraved architectural border by John Payne, depicting Theophrastus, Dioscorides, Ceres, Pomona and Gerard himself, over 2800 woodcut illustrations, lacking initial and final blanks, 2 areas of hand-colouring to title, 7B3 misbound after 7B4, index water-stained, occasional staining elsewhere, a couple of small marginal repairs, but generally clean, 18th century panelled calf, rebacked, preserving original gilt backstrip, corners repaired, raised bands worn, rubbed, [Henrey 155; Hunt 223; Nissen 698; STC 11751], folio, Adam Islip, Joice Norton & Richard Whitakers, 1633. A solid copy of the first edition of Thomas Johnson's greatly expanded version, using Plantin's woodblocks. Johnson corrected many errors from Gerard's original edition of 1597, and added 800 plants and 700 woodcuts.
