Description
2 parts in 1, first edition , engraved frontispiece and additional pictorial title to part 2, errata / advertisement f. at end, R8 blank, small neat section incised from upper margin of frontispiece, additional title loose and with chip from outer margin, 2H7 hole to outer margin (not affecting text), occasional spotting, a few small stains, contemporary calf, rebacked in 20th century dark brown calf, covers rubbed, [Wing G822], 8vo, for J.Collins, 1681. One of the most important English works on witches, ghosts, demons and other paranormal happenings. Glanvill was a member of the Royal Society and was disturbed by the rising scepticism in demons and witches in the late seventeenth century. Thinking that disbelief would lead to a rejection of Christianity, he set out to prove that ghosts and demons were real, and that they continued to be a menace to a Christian society. Includes much additional material by Henry More. Provenance: H.Dodwell (contemporary ink inscription to title).
