Glanvill was a member of the Royal Society and was disturbed by the rising scepticism in demons and witches in the late seventeenth century. Thinking that disbelief would lead to a rejection of Christianity, he set out to prove that ghosts and demons were real, and that they continued to be a menace to a Christian society.
