ALFRED MONTAGUE (BRITISH, 1832-1883) STREET SCENE, EDINBURGH. Oil on canvas, signed LL Sight: 23.5" x 19.5" Frame: 29.5" x 25.5"

This piece has had significant restoration .There is a significant varnish layer covering the build area below. There is an approximately 6" x 4" area that appears to have been overpainted in the middle of the buildings in the sky. There is an outline of a rounded rectangular form (raised line). This is possibly an overpainted building. There is more overpainting on the corner edges of the sky and possibly in the far right tower. In the village buildings there appears to be a brown overpainted on the lower half of the window openings, and the writing on the signs has been over painted with a new pigment. There is some light over cleaning that is visible in the figures. There are a few approximately 2" - 4" diameter sections of blistering in the road. These have been stabilized by the heavy varnish layer. There is some light overall yellowing to the painting from varnish/age/grime.
