Description
Very Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Milkpan with Elaborate Slip-Trailed Daisy and Berry Decoration, Incised "Morgan Maker," William Morgan, Baltimore, MD, circa 1825, tapered pan with tooled shoulder, applied tab handles, and pouring spout, decorated on the front and reverse with a brushed and slip-trailed design of a leafy garland bearing daisies and berries. Wavy line decoration below rim and under each handle. Incised in fine script on shoulder "Morgan maker". Excellent decoration, color, and condition. The inclusion of berries into Morgan's classic daisy motif is unusual. Possibly the finest Morgan example of this form known. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor from dealer, Robert Hoppe, in the 1970s. Excellent, near-mint condition with a minor base chip and a minor chip to underside at edge.
