After a painting by Caspar Netscher from 1666
Netscher’s elegant portrait art, his masterly reproduction of costly silk and brocade fabrics, made him become one of the most popular portraitists of the noble society. The technique of Netscher’s paintings, which almost all show a small to medium-size format, is of miniature accurateness. Current painting, ‘Lady with a Parrot’, is one of the central subject matters in the oeuvre of the Dutch master. The present painting is a work after Netscher that he originally created in 1666.
Condition:
The painting is in very good professionally restored condition. The canvas is doubled. Single fine fissures in the upper painting layer have been professionally touched-up. The painting shows fine craquelé. A few touch-ups are visible under UV light in the face of the depicted, at the parrot, on the left of the head of the girl, at one area at the birdcage as well as at single spots in the marginal areas. The stretcher measures 47 x 37.5 cm and the total dimensions, including the frame, are 73 x 62 cm.
Caspar Netscher (1639-1684)
As a young boy Caspar Netscher came to Arnheim to apprentice with Hendrick Coster. He became a pupil of Gerard Terborch in around 1654 and then worked for art dealers. In 1659, he traveled to Rome by boat, but he stayed in Bordeaux, where he got married in 1659. In 1662, he returned to The Hague, where he became a citizen in 1668 and where he lived almost constantly until his death. (tm)
