Most likely contemporary copy of a painting by Philips Wouwerman, who was highly appreciated during his lifetime and imitated by numerous artists

Philips Wouwerman’s horsemen, battle and camps scenes and the depictions of the bustle in the roads were already popular during his lifetime throughout Europe. He was not only appreciated for the width of his subjects, but also known as an excellent painter of horses as well as an accomplished landscape and genre painter. The present painting, most likely a contemporary copy after a painting by Wouwerman, shows a landscape scene with figurative and animal staffage resting in a grotto, which is a recurring subject in Wouwerman’s oeuvre.

The painting is in good condition considering its age, showing minor abrasion of the paint and a scratch beneath the white horse. Inspection under UV light reveals areas of retouching to the sky, the edges and the staffage. The margins show minor paint flaking. The dimensions of the panel are 33 x 41 cm.

Philips Wouwerman (before 1619 -1668)

The Dutch artist Philips Wouwerman was the son of the history painter Paulus Wouwerman. Philips Wouwerman was one of the most diverse and productive painters of the Dutch Golden Age. His paintings were already very popular during his lifetime as well as in 18th century Europe. The Dutch painter is mainly recorded for his technical ability and his fine landscape paintings with figurative staffage. (cko)
