Description
October 1885, Meiji period. Ink and color on paper, oban-sized woodblock print, mounted in a Toberoff walnut nail-less frame. "Gionmachi" or "The Gion District" is the fourth scene in Tsukioka Yoshitoshi's most well-known series, "Tsuki hyakushi" or "One Hundred Aspects of the Moon." The scene is derived from the famous Kabuki play "Chushingura" or the "Tale of the 47 Ronin," where the young Oishi Rikiya stands sumptuously dressed beneath the moonlight delivering a letter to the Ichiriki Teahouse in Kyoto where his father, Oishi Yuranosuke, is organizing a vendetta to avenge his master's death. With title to upper right, signed Yoshitoshi with artist's seal Taiso, carver's mark Enkatsu, and published by Akiyam Buemon, 1885. Crisp impression with great registration, visible wood grain and embossing. Approx. 13 7/8 by 9 1/2 in., 35.2 by 24.1 cm.
