India, 19th-early 20th century AD. A bulbous vessel with deep shoulder, flared rim with three holes for suspension; the base formed as a deer's head and neck; punched-point epigraphic text to the shoulder. Vessels such as these are used to pour milk and other liquids over the image of a deity or more commonly a Shiva Linga as part of the daily ritual. 1.2 kg, 23cm (9"). From an old London collection, formed in the 1980s.
