Description
20th century AD. A matched pair of bronze jue wine vessels, each with three spiked triangular-section legs, circumferential bands of reserved beasts on a hatched field, broad pouring lip and two vertical capped posts; C-shaped handle to one side issuing from a beast's mouth. The Jue vessel was a ritual container for warm wine. It was popular in the Xia, Shang,/i> and Zhou dynasties and can often take the shape of a dragon. It is believed that the two protuberances at the top are for lifting the vessel off a fire when the wine was sufficiently heated. 3 kg total, 34cm (13 1/2"). Ex Lincolnshire, UK, collection; acquired Lincoln, UK, 2000s. [2, No Reserve]
