Description
Ch'ing Dynasty, 1851-1908. A 'sword' constructed from from genuine Chinese cast 'cash' coins threaded together with red and white cords and mounted on an iron spine with a guard, hilt and pommel; additional coins suspended from the hilt. See Williams, J., Money, A History, for information. These 'swords' were used to drive away evil spirits in Chinese culture; it was important that all the coins be of the same type if the sword was to be most effective. 495 grams, 47cm (18 1/2"). Property of an Essex, UK collector; acquired on the UK art market, 1980-1990.
