Item Details
Description
An Arts and Crafts oval commemorative pendant , circa 1900, the oval panel with a pierced beaded border reading FLORENCE HUGH with applied flower details, the centre of the panel with a bell motif on a scrolling wire and beaded ground, inscribed August 10th 1876, suspended from a flower and leaf decorated bale, 5.3cm long The pendant celebrating the marriage on the 10th August 1876, of the iron master and notable figure in the public and industrial life of the North of England, Sir Thomas Hugh Bell, 2nd Baronet of Rounton Grange (1844-1931), to his second wife Florence Eveleen Eleanore Bell (nee Olliffe, later Dame Florence Bell, 1851-1930), a celebrated author and playwriter. Stylistically the pendant is closer to the Arts and Crafts style of circa 1900 so it could reasonably have been a 1901 present celebrating their silver wedding anniversary. Following his father's patronage of the architect Philip Webb, as well as William Morris and other leading lights of the Arts and Crafts movement, led to three commissions in the Middlesbrough area: of Rounton Grange (demolished in 1953), Red Barns House and the Dorman Long office building (originally Bell Brothers) in Middlesbrough (Webb's only commercial development).
