Description
Cambodia, Khmer empire, Angkor period, ca. late 1100s - early 1200s. During the Angkor period of the Khmer empire, sculptors mastered the art of bronze casting. Here is an example of an ensemble group rendering of three divinities, Buddha at center protected by a naga (multi-headed serpent) flanked by Avalokiteshvara and Prajnaparamita. This was the personal icon of King Jayavarman VII (ruled 1181-1218) who dictated that religious iconography include a balance between the Buddha worshipped alongside Hindu gods. He elevated Buddha at the superior position of a religious system that included Hindu gods in subsidiary roles and bronze castings during his reign reflected this. For a similar example, see catalogue "Gods of Angkor: Bronzes from the National Museum of Cambodia" by Louise Allison Cort and Paul Jett, Getty Center, 2011. This exhibition was organized by the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, Smithsonian Institution in collaboration with the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles and the National Museum of Cambodia. 9 1/8" (23 cm) T x 6 3/4 (17 cm) W.
