Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, Ixtlan del Rio style, ca. 100 BCE - 250 CE. Terracotta figural rendering of cacique sitting on a ceremonial bench and holding an enormous staff. The contrasting scale between figure and staff was purposeful as the staff symbolized the leader's power. His elaborate ornamentation including headdress, pectoral, nose ring, and ear ornaments suggests that he is engaged in ceremonial ritual. Original painted decorative details in white on red ground. An excellent example of Ixtlan del Rio variety of Nayarit figures. 4 1/2" (11.5 cm) T
