Condition
To the unaided eye, the piece looks to be in very good condition. Ultraviolet light reveals no signs of restoration. The work is mounted under glass and has not been inspected out of the frame. The frame is a brown cap with a linen and gold liner and a cream mat. The frame is in good condition with normal wear. VERSO: Label: 7th Annual National Western Art Show (1970) in San Antonio, TX, listing artist, title, etc. Previous Altermann Galleries and Connally Altermann labels. Label: Taos Art Appraisals. Index card with background info for the painting: 'DODGING COMANCHES AND HUNTING WATER' TIME- 1877 PLACE - DEVILS RIVER FLOWING INTO RIO GRANDE REF- AQUERO OF THE BRUSH COUNTRY by J. Frank Dobie and partly from the reminiscences of John Young. NOTE: Scouting for water holes in the Devil Rivers Country in order to lead a herd of cattle to Ft. Concho and on to the Colorado River (Texas). Comanches roving and raiding did not make the task of locating water safe or easy. (Copied exactly as it appears on the index card)
