Description
(1) LIBRARY SHELVING UNITS EACH CONTAINING FOUR SECTIONS, C. 1900. Designed by Bernard R. Green, Chief Engineer of Snead and Company Iron Works, these cast iron book stacks were the solution for high-volume library shelving. Since its original patent in 1875, the Snead shelves had been used by many libraries in the United States and abroad, including the Library of Congress, Yale University, the New York Public Library, and Columbia University. The shelves were economical, fireproof, quickly adjustable, and allowed air to circulate throughout the stacks. The layout can be adjusted, the shelves decorated with various pieces of hardware. For these particular shelving units, each cast iron bay has eight adjustable shelves. H 88" x L 145.5" x D 22.5"
