About 70 translations of biblical texts into German are known before the Reformation. German texts of the Bible were widespread not before the prints of the Luther Bible. 1534 Martin Luther had with significant help from Philipp Melanchthon and other theologians rendered the complete texts of the Old and New Testament into German. Under the principle of sola Scribtura (by Scripture alone) Luther oriented itself to the translations of the hebrew originals and not to the templates of the Vulgate. The single books and verses are richly illustrated with woodcuts.
