In briefly, loose brushstrokes the French painter Louis Valtat captures a view of a coastal landscape in which a woman dressed in pink is walking by. The composition is dominated by bright colors that create an atmospherically, shimmering light together with the dashed, more vibrant colors applied here and there. The influences of Impressionism are still evident here, before Valtat followed the artists of the ‘Fauves’ by using more intense and vigorous colors.

The former owner Ambroise Vollard (1865-1939) was one of the most important figures in the French art scene of this period. He owned an art gallery in Paris, worked as an art dealer and as publisher. He represented artists such as Vincent van Gogh, Paul Cézanne, Maurice de Vlaminck as well as Pablo Picasso, who published one of the most renowned series of the art history, the so-called ‘Suite Vollard’ at Vollard.

Condition:

The canvas is relined. The painting is in very good overall condition. Mainly in the marginal area occasionally small retouching visible under UV. The image dimensions are 54 x 65 cm, the framed dimensions 73 x 84 cm.

Louis Valtat (1869-1952)

In 1888 Louis Valtat attended the Académie Julian in Paris, which taught Gauguin’s principles on the use of pure color. A brief stay in Gustave Moreau’s studio followed. In 1890 Valtat opened his own studio in Paris. In 1894 he painted the stage designs for a play at the Théâtre de l’Oeuvre in collaboration with Toulouse-Lautrec. He first showed his paintings at the Salon des Indépendants. When he exhibited some of his works with artists at the Salon d’Automne in 1905, the group caused a scandal and a critic created the new term ‘fauves’. In 1914 Valtat moved from the south of France to Paris, where he painted numerous portraits of his family. Thanks to a contract with the gallery owner Ambroise Vollard in 1900, many of his paintings were acquired by important collectors.
