Links are a central theme in the oeuvre of Sorel Etrog. In 1963, the artist was inspired during a visit to the Archeological Museum in Florence by organically connected links of Etruscan sculptures to create a series of sculptures called ‘Links’. For him it was the response to the question of how to connect single links of a sculpture – because he felt that in the sculptural canon traces of gluing or soldering ought not to be visible. In the place of links came hooks and screws, uncovering a usually hidden inner world. ‘Survivors are Not Heroes’ is a 5.49 m tall bronze sculpture that the artist created only four years after his visit to Florence and that is now in the possession of the Collection of the University of Toronto. Our work was created as a study for the monumental bronze.

Cf. Pierre Restany, Sorel Etrog, Munich 2001, p. 91 (large version)

The sculpture is in very good condition with minor oxidation traces. One corner of the plinth is minimally bumped. The total height is 23 cm.
