In the 1920/30s, Vienna was a famous venue for an assorted group of female photographers, that gradually stirred up the long-established scene of professional studio photographers, dominated by men. Edith Barakovich was specialized in portraying the upper middle class. She took pictures of actors and actresses, just as of fashion and dance protagonists. The present portrait reveals a young actress wearing an elaborate costume of pearls and bears the title ‘Funny Kozary’.

Condition:

The gelatin silver print shows clear traces of age, including faint discoloration and rubbed areas in the surface. The cardboard is slightly soiled, the edges are creased. The image/sheet measures 21 x 15.7 cm.

Edith Barakovich (1896-1940)

Edith Barakovich was born in Zemun, near Belgrade, and moved to Vienna as a young girl. She received her photographic training at the ‘Graphische Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt’, which was accessible for women only since 1908 and therefor attracted most of her female colleagues, too. In 1918, Barakovich established her own photographic studio in the Prinz-Eugen-Strasse 30 in the center of Vienna. A professional portrait photographer, she knew how to place her pictures in the illustrated press right from the beginning on. (cbo)
