Robert Mapplethorpe (1946-1989)

Robert Mapplethorpe studied painting and sculpture at the prestigious Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, from 1963 to 1970. During this time he already met the young poet and musician Patti Smith, who introduced him to the art scene in Brooklyn and Manhattan. In the early 1970s, Mapplethorpe created mostly assemblages before he focused on portrait photography. As a photographer, he worked for different magazines like Andy Warhol's ‘Interview’ and only gradually developed his own style as a freelance artist. In 1977, Mapplethorpe had his first major solo exhibition at Holly Solomon Gallery in New York. His artistic output covers a wide range of motifs, including classic themes like floral still lifes, nudes and portraits as well as homoerotic and sadomasochistic compositions. During his lifetime his works have already been exhibited in renowned museums, including the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York and at the National Portrait Gallery in London. Mapplethorpe died on May 9, 1989 due to his HIV infection. (cbo)
