Description
George Gates Ross (American/ New Jersey, 1814-1856). "Portrait of Lady with Velvet Coat"-1839, oil on cradled wood panel, signed lower right "G.G. Ross/ painted Nov. 3rd 1839". Painting depicts a young lady with brunette hair seated at waist length with face turning toward her left shoulder opposing her legs, wearing a cream colored corseted dress with fur banded red velvet coat on top, her porcelain decolletage exposed by the low collared dress with a jeweled pearl necklace at her throat, the sitter wearing a gold bracelet with gem stone to her left wrist and a small ring to her pinky. Figure within a faux painted oval cartouche with red drape to left. Framed approximately 40" x 35", unframed approximately 30.25" x 24.25".
