“The Far Side of the Dollar,” Knopf: New York, 1965
“The Instant Enemy,” Knopf: New York, 1968

“The Far Side of the Dollar,” is a set of working galleys for one of MacDonald’s Lew Archer novels, including long galley sheets with copyeditor’s marks throughout. Signed as both MacDonald and Kenneth Millar. Printer’s stamped on each sheet with the name of the printer – The Haddon Craftsmen – and a request that the set be returned to the printer with corrections marked on it. Approximately 6 ½ in. x 24 in., folded once. Date stamped August 1964. Three handwritten acknowledgements on the first galley sheet were initialed and dated by three different editors.
“The Instant Enemy,” is an uncorrected proof copy of this Lew Archer Novel in the form of comb-bound galleys. An extremely uncommon proof.
Each in set of working galleys is housed in a portfolio box in blue cloth with a crème label; both measure 13 in. x 7 ¼ in. x 1 ¼ in.
“The Initial Enemy,” belonged to Anthony Boucher (1911-1968) – a leading figure in the mystery writing. Boucher was a co-founder of the Mystery Writers of America and winner of one of the first Edgar Awards that the group gave out. The annual mystery convention, Bouchercon, is named for him. “Boucher” is in orange pencil on the front cover of, “The Initial Enemy,” uncorrected proof.

This pairing of rare Ross MacDonald crime fiction consists of, “The Far Side of the Dollar,” and, “The Instant Enemy.” Both stories feature MacDonald’s reoccurring detective character Lew Archer. “The Far Side of the Dollar,” is a set of working galleys, including long galley sheets with the copyeditor’s marks throughout. It is signed as both MacDonald and Kenneth Millar. “The Instant Enemy,” is an uncorrected, extremely uncommon proof copy in the form of comb-bound galleys.

“The Far Side of the Dollar,” galleys have edge wear to the top sheet, and are otherwise in near fine condition. “The Initial Enemy” proof is a plastic spiral bound galley in original blue wrappers. The plastic binder is cracked at the head and foot, the front wrapper is partially detached, and lightly creased and faded. The leaf is worn at the edges with a few small tears. Otherwise, they are in good condition. Each book measures 13 x 7 ¼ x 1 ¼ in. (height x width x depth).

Ross MacDonald (a.k.a. Kenneth Millar) (Los Gatos, California 1915-1983 Santa Barbara, California)

MacDonald is the master of American hardboiled mysteries, bringing incredible psychological depths to his characters’ motives. Born Kenneth Millar to Canadian immigrants in Los Gatos California, Ross MacDonald is his pen name. He began his career writing for pulp magazines while earning his PhD in literature at the University of Michigan. It wasn’t until his sixth novel that MacDonald settled on his pseudonym. It was in his 1946 short story, “Find the Woman,” when MacDonald first introduced his detective Lew Archer. MacDonald found inspiration for his detective’s name from the, “The Maltese Falcon,” character Miles Archer and Lew Wallace, the author of “Ben Hur.” In 1974, he received the Grand Master Award from the Mystery Writers of America, and in 1982, he received ‘The Eye,’ Lifetime Achievement Shamus Award from the Private Eye Writers of America.
