“Italia Imperiale,” is widely respected as one of the finest Italian photography books from the fascist era. This large scale volume propaganda book is fascinating guide to Benito Mussolini’s Italy. Bringing together full page modernist photograph reproductions, colored illustrations, and collages, the volume is impacting. The subject matter spans from industrial and architectural scenes to a note worthy portrait of Mussolini himself. All text in Italian.

Featured in black-and-white, duo-tone, and full color, there are reproductions of photographs by Frederico Patellani, Stefano Bricarelli, Lucio Ridenti and Bruno Stefani and illustrations by Marcello Nizzoli, Mario Sironi, Bramante Buffoni, Ruggero Micaelles, Erberto Carboni and Paolo Garretto.

The volume has some scuffing, scratching and minor staining on boards. There is slight creasing to the leaf preceding the title-page and to the last two leaves. This edition has been expertly rebacked. Overall, this is a tight copy is in very good condition.

Manlio Morgagni (Forlì-Cesena 1879-1943 Rome)

Manlio Morgagni was a journalist, mayor of Milan, and proponent of Italian Fascism. He was also a member of the Italian Senate and director of the news agency Agenzia Stefani, which was closely aligned with Benito Mussolini. Manlio Morgagni was a personal friend and supporter of Mussolini and committed suicide upon hearing the news of the dictator’s fall.
