JAMES MONTGOMERY FLAGG (New York, N.Y. 1877-1917). Color lithograph/poster, "I Want You", the most famous poster of World War I (and revived again in World War II); Flagg himself wore a hat and fake beard to be the model for Uncle Sam. 28 1/2 by 38 1/4 in. laid down on heavy paper. c.1917. In wood frame. N.B. Flagg's poster identified with the American people that it was later adapted for use in World War II. Originally published as the cover for the July 6, 1916 issue of Leslie's Magazine with the title "What Are You Doing for Preparedness?", this portrait of Uncle Sam went on to become-according to Flagg-"the most famous poster in the world".
