Seated figure of Buddha Shakyamuni with his legs crossed over, called virasana
Hands folded in his lap for the dhyana mudra
Serene-meditative facial expression and downcast eyes
The head with large, stylized curls and long earlobes
Dressed in a simple, close-fitting garment
The oval, slightly conical base with low relief of a lotus flower
Height: ca. 67 cm
Condition consistent with age
Provenance: Private collection, Belgium

A comparable sandstone figure is found in the exhibition ‘Lost Kingdoms. Hindu-Buddhist Sculpture of Early Southeast Asia, 5th to 8th Century’ at the Metropolitan Museum, lent from the Musée National des Arts Asiatiques-Guimet in Paris, which exhibits Hindu, Buddhist sculptures of the first millennium (see exhibition catalogue: John Guy, Lost Kingdoms: Hindu-Buddhist Sculpture of Early Southeast Asia, New York 2014).

Dhyana Mudra

The dhyana mudra or samadhi mudra is the gesture of meditation. In this posture, both hands are placed over each other in Buddhas lap. The palms are directed skyward. The fingers are stretched or they are partly slight bent. The gesture is, among others, typical of Buddha Amitabha.

Condition:

The sandstone figure is in age related condition. The height measures ca. 67 cm.
