This work depicts Zhong Kui, a figure of Chinese mythology that is often painted on doors as a guardian spirit. Traditionally Zhong Kui is regarded as a vanquisher of ghosts and evil spirits. He is often depicted with a grim expression, round eyes and a full beard. In this case he is surrounded by flying bats and is dressed in a long red robe. The upper edge is adorned with a calligraphy and a seal.
Condition:
The visually appealing painting shows signs of wear. Creases, stains, minimal loss of material of the paper and rubbed edges with loose silk threads are visible. The work has a total dimension of 193 x 76 cm and the image itself measures 124 x 63 cm. (lvp)
