This Tibetan conch shell trumpet, called dung-dkar in Tibetan, is a ritual instrument made from a so-called sankha shell which is partly covered with silver mounts. The latter show a detailed decoration with animals and mythical creatures amidst scroll patterns, which is partially adorned with turquoise and coral gems. The conch is one of the eight auspicious symbols of Buddhism, called ashtamangalas, and is used in Tibet as a religious musical instrument to invoke spirits or banish evil and herald Buddha's enlightenment. The sound is created by blowing through the mouthpiece on one end, much like a trumpet.
Condition:
The conch shell is in good condition with signs of age and wear. The mount shows some dents. One tip is dented and shows material loss. The dimensions are 16 x 20 cm (heigth x length). (tfa)
