Renoir is best known for his depictions of curvaceous women, and this superb, fresh impression of Renoir’s “Baigneuse, debout, en pied” is no exception. The subject is modest in her nudity, clasping a white cloth to her chest, as her cheeks and lips flush pink. The curvature of her figure is elegantly composed in soft pastel tones and smooth lines.
Executed in 1896, this color lithograph on laid paper is signed with the artist’s initials in the stone. Printed and published by Auguste Clot, Paris, the work measures 15 ½ x 13 ½ inches. In overall good condition with no evidence of tears or repairs.
Pierre-Auguste Renoir (French, 1841-1919)
Celebrated as one of the greatest modern French painters, Pierre-Auguste Renoir is best known for his portraiture, figurative work, and his series of bathing women. Among the first group of French Impressionist painters, Renoir rejected the tradition method of painting, working spontaneously to capture the fleeting effects of light using large brushstrokes, light pigments and thick impasto, often painting en plein air. By the 1870s Renoir grew dissatisfied with Impressionism, returning to a more traditional approach. A prolific artist, he made several thousand paintings over the course of his lifetime. The warm sensuality of Renoir's style have made his paintings some of the most well-known and frequently-reproduced works in the history of art.
