Description

1969 Jaguar E-type Series 2 4.2 Litre Roadster

Chassis No. 1R 1235

Engine No. 7R 6112-9

The sensational Jaguar E-Type has forged an iconic position in automotive design since it appeared in 1961. Enzo Ferrari hailed it "The most beautiful car ever made" (Classic Car Review 1964, article by Sean Curtis) and in 1996 the New York City Museum of Modern Art recognised the significance of the E-Type's design by adding a blue roadster to its permanent design collection, one of only six motor cars to receive the distinction.

The E-Type's performance had been more than satisfactory at around 500lb (227kg) – lighter than the XK150 and with D-type experience gained by aerodynamicist Malcolm Sayer Jaguar’s racing and passenger car efforts came together to create one of the most stylish and dexterous shapes ever in original motor car design. The lighter celebrated Series 1 E-type Jaguar had changed the sportscar world forever.

In 1965 the 4.2-litre model was launched offering a gearbox with synchromesh on first gear together with the bigger, torquier engine. The Series 2 E-Types then underwent a number of design changes phased in during 1967 applied largely due to U.S. design legislation. From 1969 major changes were made to the bodywork with a more raked windscreen; the most distinctive feature being the absence of the aerodynamic glass headlight covers. Improvements included power steering, bigger brakes and optional air-conditioning for the first time and better engine cooling thanks to an enlarged air-intake and twin electric fans.

Other characteristics of the Series 2 include the wrap-around raised rear bumper and larger front indicators. A new collapsible steering column was fitted. An advanced ignition switch incorporating a steering lock was also introduced. New seats were fitted with head rests (as required by U.S. law beginning in 1969). Rocker dash switches replaced the earlier toggle switches giving an asymmetrical layout. The engine is easily identified visually by the change from smooth polished cam covers to a more industrial ribbed appearance. This example being offered is one of 776 Open Two-Seater Series 2 built and holds a Jaguar Heritage Certificate. The date of manufacture is 3rd July 1969. Henly’s London was the original distributor. Chichester Automobiles was the original dealer and the registration mark HBP 77H was issued in West Sussex.

Presented in factory black livery with tan leather trim, black soft-top and Moto-Lita leather rim steering wheel, chrome wire wheels and full synchromesh gearbox. We are advised by the vendor that this car has been well maintained and serviced with a new clutch being fitted in November 2013 and new soft-top in February 2014. The vehicle has been one of a stable of vehicles owned by the current Melbourne Collector for many years.

This vehicle will be sold unregistered.
