Two-piece table screen
Rectangular plaque with frame and base
White jade carved in precise relief
Depicted are five cranes under a tree or between flowers or stones
Richly carved frame with fine open work décor (later)
Total dimensions: 33 x 36.5 cm
Good condition
Provenance: Private collection, Berlin
Such jade screens were made of carefully chosen highly-translucent stones, which should bring to bear the different depths of the carved image in the most ideal way. The challenge for the artists was to carve the jade on both sides so that the light can shine through the carving, creating a harmonious work of art.
Similar table screens with a circular jade cane be found in the Palace Museum in Beijing.

Condition:
The table screen is in good condition with slight signs of age and wear. The frame shows minimal nicks and small restorations. The total height measures 33 cm and the width is 36.5 cm.
