Description:
First Edition. Original cloth binding. 359pp. Introduction by Romanzo Adams, University of Hawaii.
One of a handful serious scholarly studies of Asian-Americans - without racist bias or polemic - before World War II, touching on agricultural work, religion, politics, education, language, culture and discrimination. Smith's book is unique in that it focuses on both Chinese-Americans and Japanese-Americans in Hawaii, as well as the continental US. Romanzo Adams, who wrote the introduction, was author of a classic earlier work on the Japanese in Hawaii (1924) and that same year published a controversial study of interracial marriage among Hawaiian Asian and whites.
