viii, 80 pp. (8vo) 21.5x12.5 cm (8½x5"), modern paper wrappers. First French Edtion.
Translated from the English edition of the same year. The writers present the Anglican missionaries working in Tahiti as noble and devoted protectors of the Tahitian natives, working to bring salvation to the benighted Tahitians, whereas the French are portrayed as Popish intriguers and harsh military oppressors. The pamphlet promotes the narrative that the political cession of Tahiti to French power was the result of extortion and force whilst the goodly English supposedly favor self-determination for Tahitians. The publication of this controversial document in France is a commentary on the democratic impulses of the French publisher, encouraging tracts critical of France to circulate in France.
