Description:
Petition of Citizens of California praying for an appropriation for the improvement of the water-front of the city of Oakland... (US Senate Doc. No. 111, May 22, 1874) 5pp.
Asking for funds to improve the Oakland water-front to enable "any class of ships to load and discharge". Noting that over 100 ships a year, carrying 450,000 tons of freight were then loading at a temporary wharf owned by the Central Pacific Railroad, being "compelled to pay tribute to the great overland railroad" for "want of proper facilities to land". Among the hundreds of signers of the petition listed were local magnates Horatio Livermore, A. Chabot and Warren Olney.
