With simple cubic form without ornamental decoration the end table was to convince the purists

This end table of white lacquered conifer wood was created in around 1910. The style of Josef Hoffmann has adopted a much reduced form already in 1910. This can also be seen in the example of this end table, which was to convince the purists with his simple cubic form without ornamental decoration. Only the profiled legs have stayed as a last remainder of the design. Thereby the profiles emphasize the architectonic construction of the small table. The table has got a top drawer with a silvered metal ball as the handle and a glassy cover panel. The table formerly was the property of Austrian painter Broncia Koller-Pinell.

Condition:

The table is 66 cm in height and measures 50 x 40.5 cm. It is in very good restored condition. Paint and cover panel have been renewed.

Josef Hoffmann (1870-1956)

Josef Hoffmann was the son of intellectual, supportive parents who ensured he received the best possible education at the State Industrial School in Brno and later at the Academy for Fine Arts in Vienna under Otto Wagner. It was here, he got to know Joseph Maria Olbrich with whom he founded the Vienna Secession in 1897 that he already left again in 1905. He worked as a teacher at the arts college from 1899. In 1903 he founded the Vienna Workshop with Fritz Warndorfer and Koloman Moser. He co-founded the German Werkbund and, in 1912, the Austrian Werkbund. He worked as a designer and architect and his designs are still extremely popular. (afa)
