Lovely pair of angels in expressive postures
The present pair of angels holding candlesticks are probably the work of the German sculptor Joseph Götsch (1728-1793). The three-dimensional figures consist of all round carved linden wood and were gilt at a later date. The angels face each other and are depicted with curly hair and loincloth. With their hands, they carry decorative candlesticks in form of cornucopias.
The figures show major restoration marks, mainly affecting the glued wings. The upper part of the cornucopias and the candle domes were probably replaced. In addition, there are marks of an inactive woodworm infestation some losses of the material and the gilding. In some parts, mainly to the wings, are still visible the original colors. The total height of the figures is 75 cm each.
Joseph Götsch (1728-1793)
Born in Bad Aibling in the district of Rosenheim, the wood carver Joseph Götsch was a student and collaborator of Franz Ignaz Günther (1725-1775). He mainly worked for the church in Rott at the Inn. He there executed several major works, including the pulpit, the confessionals, the pews and the side altars.
